Go into the ASB bank branch to deposit some cash into someone else's
account. "Sorry, we don't allow cash deposits into another person's
account".

What?!? You can't even deposit money into someone's account these days?
They no longer accept cheques. How the [BEEP] do they expect people to
be able to do things like pay for TradeMe purchases? No doubt they
think "everyone" uses silly internet banking.

The whole world's going to complete crap with less and less actual
*service* from businesses. :-(

Assuming you had the correct bank account number, I would ask to speak
to a supervisor or manager.

Having said that banks expect that all purchases are indeed paid for
using Internet Banking or cards (credit or debit).

They won't accept *any* cash deposits into *other* people's accounts
because they're scared witless about being done for money laundering.

It's completely and utterly ridiculous. Doing anything on TradeMe and
similar sales is going to be impossible, unless you use internet
banking (which of course is exactly what the banks what you to do so
they can provide even less actual service). The way the world is going,
you may as well just burn all your money on a bonfire and live in a
shack in the wilderness with no contact with anyone else. :-\

Paul made a reasonable suggestion. Are you looking for reasonable

Perhaps your only option. With money-laundering and illicit trade a
big issue, cash is indeed under threat.

Neither a manager nor the ombudsman is going to change what is now
standard policy. Banks have decided this is what their going to do and
the customer simply has to accept it.

I already knew the supposed reason why, but the whole thing is
ridiculously silly. There will be some small businesses that will
simply have to shut down because they can't get paid easily because
banks don't actually want to provide proper service.

For example, the tree trimmer man who comes to our house one or twice a
year to to prune the big trees. We pay him in cahs, but sometimes if
there is extra work to be done, we don't have enough cash, so we have
to deposit the extra into his account at a branch ... which can no
longer be done.

Money-laundering by depositing cash into an account is likely to be the
least favoured option. There are far quicker and easier ways to do it
than queuing up at a bank branch to see the one or two tellers they
bother to put on the desks, most of which is via the same internet and
electronic banking that the banks are trying to force everyone to use.

The banking Ombudsman article clearly outlines money-laundering
measures required by law. Banks are required to comply - the decision
was not theirs to make.

You could always have more cash on hand or pay him more at a later
date. The problem you have is with the law, not the banks.

restricting the use of cash.

It's irrevelant for the who and why. As I said, complaining to neither
of those suggestions will actually fix the problem.

So the tree trimmer man has to wait six months / a year to get paid
fully?? And that's by many of his customers. Plus, by then it will
require even more cash to pay for the remainder of the previous job
plus the new one. :-\

It's simply another case of banks stopping the provision of an actual
service ... whether that's due to the law or their own decision doesn't
really matter.

Realistically all they had to do to satisfy the law was require photo
ID and add the details to the deposit record, but the bank decided to
simply disallow it completely. If you're a customer of the same bank,
you can no doubt get around it by depositing the cash into your own
account and then they can transfer it to another account ... which of
course means they also get two transaction fees.

As the title says, it's businesses making things harder for the
customer than they should be, yet again.
