There is at least one NZ-based invite-only torrent site, but it's full
of schoolboys oogling over pr0n.

The admins are all authoritarian wankers with no idea what it's all
about, too.

Good speeds on new stuff (eg Lost), though.

It's a great way to d/l the latest Linux apps iso's and freeware (OpenOffice
anyone?).

Dangerous for d/l any music or films. That's where the authorities will get
you. Better to use ng's for that :-)

Newsgroups.

You['d have to get access to a US-based server, though. Few, if any, Kiwi
news servers carry the binaries hierachy that circulates files.

There was a time when the binaries (mainly porn stills then) accounted for
over 75% of all usenet newsgroup traffic. Probably still the case where
servers carry binaries.

The idea of downloading free porn is rather tempting...LOL
but i believe in real hands on experience ;-)

So there isn't a site that has nz based torrents?
like if i wanted to download last week's esp of shortland street for example
if i type shortland street into bitlord i get random results or nothing.

Well, he is saying that there is, but its closed and you must be invited
by another member (who has been a member for some time and has a
respectable ratio). I know of two, but am only a member of one, i don't
know if its the same one "Not Dave" was mentioning, but they have decent
xvid captures (from cable) of a few NZ shows (the good ones), for
example eating media lunch, at very decent speeds.

Fair enough, i wonder how i can make a good impression to get a invite?

Hmm, I don't have any invites at the moment. You will need to find
someone who does, and convince them that you are will be a good member
(The name of the person who invited you will appear on your public
profile page.) Many of the people there are also on the NZ DC hubs,
which have some good content, but its hard to get a slot, and NZ-only DC
has significantly declined since jetstart was phased out.

With 128k upstream on ADSL, you won't find many - if any - usable servers of
any sort.

Having said that I share a few files on the Gnutella/Bearshare/Limewire
network that are in low demand.

......and even then my 128k upstream ADSL connection can be saturated by the
couple of dozen folks globally who - at the same time - want things like
MP3's of speeches made by Mahatma Gandhi or Winston Churchill or Noam
Chomsky or a vidcap of American Michael Moore on TVNZ's Eating Media Lunch.
