Discussion:
Overseas and cannot access my xtra mail via outlook

I am currently overseas, and I cannot access my xtra email through
outlook. When I send /receive the mail does not receive.

Telecom are a bunch of wankers for blocking popmail access- what is the
point of an international internet if telecom are putting in fucked up
restrictions such as this. Maybe they want cash to access the pop mail
from overseas.

If telecom ruled the internet, the world would be a much bigger place.

The xtramail sucks big time too.

Does anyone know a way of getting around this spurious telecom
restriction?

other than getting someone to relay/proxy your requests, or use the
stupidly expensive international service they offer, then no.

<thoughts> would have thought most here would have been aware of it, it
gets moaned about, about once a year or so</thoughts>

Rather than give you a lame answer like change providers...

::OPTION 1::
Secure Remote Email
http://www.xtra.co.nz/products/0,,11954,00.html

Cost = $2.50/mth

Login here to subscribe;

::OPTION 2::
Xtra Global Roaming - some reading involved...

Hope that helps.

Sorry, have been busy!! I phoned my girlfriend and somehow walked her
through changing outlook to forward my email to my gmail account. This
works OK, i just need to receive my email.

I think , next time I will subscribe to this xtra service - I had not
heard of this service previously.

Now, I just have to countdown the days until I return home ... 5 more
weeks in the european winter dammit. Although, does not seem to be such
a flash summer down under.

Seriously? Get someone to access your mailbox and forward you the mail.

But in future.....don't use Xtra!!!!

Get another ISP, or set up your own mail server off a DSL/cable connection
with a static IP.

I have my own mail server and have never had any trouble accessing my mail
anywhere.

I'm indifferent to Xtra as much as the next person, but I think he was
asking for a realistic solution right here, right now.

...and I offered one. Short of getting someone to forward his mail to him,
right here, right now, he has no other way to access the Xtra mail server
if he isn't on Xtra's network.

.....unless maybe he called Xtra from whereever he is and got iPass set up
for himself.

Why not set up an Orcon email account and FWD your mail from xtra to
Orcon which can be done via the web mail interface.

Apart from their sucky web interface, NO, there are only "pay xtra more
money" options. This "feature" is not for security or anything else, it
is simply there to try and force you to pay more money for what other
ISPs offer for free.

$2.50 per month for secure email doesnt seem like a lot of nmoney

xtra first bnrought this in when it was obvious people wounld pop there
mail from some other isp account and xtra would not get any money at all
for the user of their servers if the user was on a $2.50 oer hour
account.

Not quite
you can get from 2 hours a month prepaid ($5) and there is also an email
only option that charges at $2.50 per hour if you use Xtra dialup to
access it

id expect in the email only option that you can't pop/smtp unless using
xtra dialup...as usual

ummm, that account no longer exists as an option to choose from, so
yeah, it's gone, these two are the replacements for it.

That's right, and over 3 years ago.

There is now a minimum monthly charge of $5 which gives up to 2 hours,
and $2.50 per hour for additional hours over 2.

| From 17 October 2001 we will be modifying the range of plans available
| from Xtra. These changes mean that the plan you're on will become
| Xtra Prepay 2, our two hour plan. Each month you'll get two hours
| of Internet access (to be used in that month) for $5, which will be
| charged to your account in advance.
|
| Once you've used two hours, additional hours will be charged at the
| existing hourly rate. So if you normally spend more than two hours a
| month online, you won't notice any difference.

Wrong again - there is a hosted email account available from Xtra. $2.50
+gst per month and you can use it as a dialup connection as well should you
be prepared to pay $2.50 per hour

A "Hosted mail" account has always been availible, we were talking about

just setup the "Forward" option to a temp Hotmail
account. Easy. Goto www.xtramail.co.nz to setup.

the only pitful is that you lose the spam/virus checking
on the forwarded email.

Get an Orcon Free for Life email address and set xtramail to foward to
it, works a treat and can pop from any connection, smtp is okay after
pop as well.
